Respect: A Musical Journey of Women Respect: A Musical Journey of Women

by Dorothy Marcic

Vanderbilt professor Dr. Dorothy Marcic created the show based on her book, RESPECT: Women and Popular Music. Combining excerpts of over sixty top 40 hits from 1900s to today, from Someone to Watch Over Me to I Will Survive, this is the journey of women told through music, from the codependence of I Will Follow Him and the anger of These Boots are Made for Walking, through the cynicism of What's Love Got to Do with It, and finally to the strength of Hero.

Carousel Carousel

by Rodgers and Hammerstein

Featuring such classic songs as You'll Never Walk Alone, June is Bustin' Out All Over and If I Loved You, this lyrical and moving testament to the triumph of love over everything, even death, stands as one of Rodgers and Hammerstein's most emotionally potent and dramatically powerful musicals. When Billy, a carnival barker, falls in love with the lovely Julie Jordan and marries her, he shortly finds himself bitter and unemployed, unable to provide for his young, pregnant wife. He resolves to fix his situation by taking part in a robbery which goes very wrong. Before a heavenly judge, Billy pleads for another chance to return to Earth, to redeem himself by helping his now grown-up, troubled daughter Louise.

Cabaret Cabaret

Book by Joe Masteroff, music by John Kander, lyrics by Fred Ebb

At the dawn of the 1930s in Berlin, the Nazi party quietly grows stronger. The Kit Kat Klub is a seedy cabaret, a place of decadent celebration set against the backdrop of growing Nazi terror. It's here that Cliff, a young American writer struggling with his first novel, meets and falls for Sally Bowles, a vivacious singer at the cabaret who never seems to have a care in the world and always has a glass of champagne in hand.

Mark Twain's The Diary of Adam and Eve Mark Twain's The Diary of Adam and Eve

adapted by David Birney

Master storyteller and towering literary figure, Mark Twain, hilariously recreates the first days in this ingenious, witty and delightful retelling of the dawn of human creation, with many a grain of truth for today's gender disputes. Adam is something of a recluse, ill prepared for the arrival of Eve, a talkative, emotional and highly-charged female. Yet in time, after some conflict, they learn to live together and come to realize that men and women can, in fact, live in harmony.
