Once Upon a Mattress

This musical adaptation of the family favorite, “The Princess and the Pea”, starred Carol Burnett in the lead role when it opened on Broadway in 1959. It has since enjoyed several television adaptations and has become a much-loved favorite among theatergoers everywhere. It tells the story of Winifred, or “Fred”, a rough-around-the-edges, not-quite ladylike princess who is forced to endure the torture of sleeping on mattresses with a pea under them, just to prove to the Queen and her court that she is, indeed, a princess.
